Educated to be an apothecary, John Hill (1714?-1775) published prodigiously on a wide array of subjects in the natural sciences. This book forms the third work in his General natural history (the other two being on plants and minerals) although it was intended to stand as an independent text. It is a small folio, illustrated with 28 full-page copperplate engravings.
Full calf binding. Missing leather on boards with evidence of tideline from water damage along spine joint, resulting in sulfuric acid burns to leather. Cellophane pressure sensitive tape used on upper board to repair tears in leather. Boards and endleaves detached. Staining, dirt, and discoloration throughout textblock. Sewing intact, minor discoloration from mold in gutter. Conservators will disbind the book and wash the pages in de-ionized water to reduce staining. After washing, re-sew the book on cords. Create a new full leather binding for the book. Retain the original covers and house them with the new binding in a custom clamshell box.
