Illustrations of the nests and eggs of birds of Ohio : with text

By Howard Jones. Circleville, Ohio, U.S.A: [s.n.], 1886.

This over-sized, two-volume book of hand-colored lithographs was the extraordinary achievement of a young woman and her family in Ohio in the 1880s. The accuracy and detail of the illustrations of birds' nests and eggs is un-precedented, and the text by her brother provides thorough field notes on the bird species, geographical distributions, and migration patterns. The book is the subject of Joy Kiser's America's Other Audubon (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012) that reproduces all of the plates from the Smithsonian's copy.

Condition and Treatment:

The two heavy volumes are bound in red morocco; the illustrations are in excellent condition, but the boards are detached on both volumes with areas of wear and loss on all corners, and the gilt-decorated spine covers are worn with areas of loss at the head and tail; the decorative end-papers are brittle and chipped. Both volumes will be re-backed and the corners repaired with a matching leather and the inner hinges replaced with airplane linen; the end-papers will be repaired with Japanese paper to prevent further loss; and all surfaces of the leather will be cleaned with a mild cleaning agent.
