Le Spectacle est Dans la Rue
Le spectacle est dans la rue
Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (1901 –1968), was a French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer whose inventive graphic techniques show influences of Surrealism and Cubism. He was very popular in Europe and the United States during the 1930s. In 1935, Cassandre signed an exclusive contract with the firm of Draeger Freres for the French editions of his posters. Draeger, a French printer who published some of the masterpieces of French design was a pioneer of advertising. Between the world wars, the company reached its peak collaborating, with renowned artists, mainly illustrators and poster designers. This fine example of Cassandre’s work for Draeger’s features a variety of themes from cars to cigarettes.
This is an early 20th century spiral bound book of French advertising posters. The textblock is heavily damaged with large tears and areas of loss to the front and back covers. The spiral is not intact, causing further damage to the text. Conservators will remove the spiral and repair the tears to the pages. The pages will then be placed in Mylar L-sleeves and a custom enclosure created to house the pages.
