Instead of the typical marbled paper, the book's inside covers feature a zig-zag pattern of black and gold lines, with designs of flowers, tassels, and letters in contrasting colors. Published in Paris in 1869, this book pushed the limits of art books with its multicolored prints (chromolithographs), featuring gold sketches and outlines within the colors. The book's publisher, Firmin Didot Frères, Fils et Cie, was well-known for its illustrated editions of classic texts.
