Maya Angelou (1928-2014) is best remembered as a prominent African American poet and civil rights activist. But she was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, and was the recipient of multiple Grammy Awards as well as the Mother Teresa Award, showing her wide range of talents. Her famous works include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which was her first autobiography at age 17, and also the related poem, The Heart of a Woman, which was critically acclaimed as it continued the theme of a strong woman who will not be put down or tamed. This recent biography recounts Angelou’s achievements as well as lesser known works, and has been revised to include an “In Memoriam” chapter after her death.
