By J. G. Wattjes (1879-1944). Amsterdam (Holland): N.V. Uitgevers-Maatschappij "Kosmos", c1931.

Heavily illustrated with black and white photographs, this book—translates to Modern Cottages and Country-Houses in Holland—documents the 20th century Dutch trend in new housing, villa architecture. After the 19th century migration to the cities for industrial jobs, the 20th century saw a reverse movement of people out of the cities and back to the countryside in Holland. The introduction (written in Dutch, French, German, and English) explains the need for small, efficient, and simple suburban and rural housing. The planning requirements were that villas and cottages be in keeping with the landscape: picturesque, practical, private, economical, and that no two ever be the same. Elevations and floor plans are included, along with designs for interiors and furnishings. The designs represent a variety of styles, from thatched roofs to spare modernism, and demonstrate homes in a variety of sizes and prices. The author ends with the hope, “May this volume serve to spur the architects to individual creation, arouse in others interest in Dutch country-house architecture and present the foreigner with the position of present-day villa building in the Netherlands.”
