On the origin of species by means of natural selection : or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life

By Charles Darwin. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1860.

Darwin’s book documenting his theory of evolution by natural selection was first published in London in November 1859. Contradicting established religious concepts about the creation and permanence of species, it was wildly controversial and quickly sold out edition after edition. Within a year, publisher Appleton & Co. in New York had brought out not just the first American editions of the original text but also this new one “revised and augmented by the author.” This copy of the revised edition was donated by Darwin scholar Dr. Sandra Herbert, who has published extensively on the history of science in the 18th and 19th centuries and specifically on Darwin’s impact on our understanding of the natural world.

Condition and Treatment:

This volume has a mid-19th century green pebbled cloth binding. The sewing has failed, leaving the textblock in multiple pieces. The spine is partially detached with areas of loss at the head and tail of the spine. The corners are abraded and the bookcloth worn away. Conservators will re-sew the textblock and repair the case using toned airplane linen. Toned Japanese paper will be used to repair the corners.
