Outlines of Astronomy

Outlines of astronomy, 5th edition

By John F. W. Herschel. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1858.

Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) — astronomer, mathematician, and chemist — was one of the most important English scientists of the 19th century. In his Outlines of Astronomy, he provides a complex review of what was known of the physical world in his era. His textbook appeals to both the general and the specialist reader as it discusses a range of phenomena from Earth's basic characteristics to astronomy.

Condition and Treatment:

Bound in a contemporary cloth case binding with original endsheets. The lower board (back cover) is detached. The upper board and the first section of text have been repaired with tape on the joints, causing discoloration. The sewing structure is weak and some sections of the text are loose.  Conservators will disbind, tape and residual adhesive will be removed, textblock resewn, and the case binding repaired and reattached to the book.
