Travels in Brazil, in the years 1817-1820; undertaken by command of His Majesty the King of Bavaria.
Johann Baptist von Spix and K.F.P. von Martius headed an expedition into Amazonia and the interior of Brazil from 1817 to 1820, conducting a scientific survey of the region, collecting zoological and botanical specimens, and making extensive contact with native peoples. SIL holds the scientific publications that resulted, describing, illustrating, and naming hundreds of new species of plants and animals. This narrative of the expedition, translated from the original German into English, includes important locality data for the collections and commentary on the indigenous cultures of the region that is not otherwise available in their writings.
