Zoonooz (Dec. 1933-Dec. 1935)

Zoonooz, Vol. 1-3

By Belle J. Benchley, Editor. San Diego: Zoological Society of San Diego, 1933-1935.

This gathered volume of ZOONOOZ, the palindromic newsletter of the Zoological Society of San Diego, optimistically restarts its publication after a hiatus during the Great Depression. Belle J. Benchley, who was the Executive Director of the San Diego Zoo, was also the editor of ZOONOOZ. During her twenty-eight year career, Benchley grew the Zoo from small animal collection to a world class operation. ZOONOOZ is still in publication today. The articles within create quite a snapshot of 1930s San Diego: “Snakes of San Diego County” (with rattlesnake dos and don'ts), animal loans from William Randolph Hearst, highlights of the Californian Pacific International Exposition (1935) exhibition palaces, and a letter of appreciation from wildlife donor, explorer, and filmmaker Martin Johnson. Advertising recommends lunch at Frederick’s for the “Finest Chinese Food” (though you could get a Special Lunch Plate for 50 cents at the Zoo Café), and, ironically, promotes the goods and services of San Diego’s local furrier, Joseph Noonan.
