Räume und Menschen
The Cooper Hewitt Library has a large collection of books on interior design of many countries, eras, and styles. This book discusses the important and influential Art Deco period. It features furnishings, including wallpaper samples, for many different living and working spaces. Extremely bold colors and styles demonstrate great imagination in promoting modern design. August Trueb, German architect and graphic designer, was active in Stuttgart in the 1920s and 1930s. He was first trained as an architect but later turned to interior decoration, then advertising art.
Bird-Life
This work, translated by Henry M. Labouchere and William Jesse from the second edition of Das Leben der Vögel, was written by A.E. Brehm, the author of the very well-known zoological encyclopedia Brehms Tierleben (Brehm’s Life of Animals). The first half of the book consists of essays describing various behavioral, social, morphological, and even economic characteristics of birds. The last half is a study of fifty individual species. The book is dedicated to Brehm’s father, Christian, a pastor and noted ornithologist in his own right.
Kreuterbuch
The Kreuterbuch of Adam Lonicer (1528-1586), first published in 1557, is an early example of a bestseller—the book remained in print in various forms through 1783, which is a testament to its popular appeal. Although the name Kreuterbuch literally translates to “herb book,” and most of it is indeed about plants, a great deal of the book is devoted to describing the natures and uses of animals, metals, and gemstones.
