Claim your identity with an ORCID
ORCID provides a [free] persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized. Publishers and funders are increasingly requiring an ORCID id from authors and investigators. And while Smithsonian Research Online does not require that authors register at ORCID, the use of this identifier in the SRO database ensures that publication information flows with minimal friction between and online among systems. Please register if you haven’t done so already and send your name and ORCID id to: research-online@si.edu.
The Smithsonian Libraries has an Institutional ORCiD Membership. This means you can use your SI credentials (email, network username and password) to create and maintain your account.
Go to https://orcid.org/signin and choose: Institutional account. The Smithsonian logo should appear - if it doesn't, use the search box to find Smithsonian Institution, then select Continue.
Once selected, you can log in to ORCID with your Smithsonian network username and password.
If you already have an ORCID, and this is the first time selecting "Institutional account," you will be asked one time to log in using your old ORCID username and password.
In order to effectively manage your research output captured in Smithsonian Research Online, the Libraries suggests that you make your name and affiliation with the Smithsonian publicly visible in your profile. Each section of your biography (profile) includes visibility settings. Next to Employment, please choose everyone.
