The wilderness hunter

It is no secret that Theodore Roosevelt was an enthusiastic hunter. Here is a quote from the preface of this book, written by Roosevelt himself:

Multivariate data analysis

Data analysis and data modeling are extremely important in the world of ecology, so it’s no surprise that the three titles with the most checkouts per year at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Library are all statistics or modeling texts, including Multivariate data analysis. Multivariate analysis “refers to all statistical methods that simultaneously analyze multiple measurement on each individual or object under investigation." This book is particularly a powerful tool for researchers without formal training in statistics.

Numerical ecology

This title was first published in French in 1979, and it remains a classic text in the field of Ecology. It is written for practicing ecologists and is one of the top three most popular titles borrowed by users of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Library. It covers riveting (o.k…maybe not, but quite helpful and important to ecologists!) topics such as “Complex ecological data sets,” “Ecological data series,” and “Spatial analysis.”

Duncan & Prasse's Veterinary Laboratory Medicine

The fifth edition of this important book provides comprehensive, illustrated information about the tests that are necessary for diagnosing and treating the animals at the National Zoological Park. Additionally, it is required reading for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, Anatomic Pathology Certification Examination for which the National Zoological Park's pathology fellows are often preparing.

Les pigeons

Pauline de Courcelles Knip (1781-1851) was a bird artist in Paris who had studied under the famed French artist Jacques Barraband.  She appropriated ornithologist Coenraad Temminck’s work on the pigeon family as text for her remarkable illustrations of pigeons.  These 147 folio plates are the richest and most delicate illustrations of this group of birds ever produced; printed in colors and finished by hand, the 87 engraved plates in volume 1 were first published in parts in 1809-11 and then reissued in 1838 (as in this copy), when the second volume began appearing.
