The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art and the Smithsonian Libraries present a new exhibition, “Artists’ Books and Africa,” at the National Museum of African Art beginning Sept. 16. “Artists’ Books and Africa” will be on display through Sept. 11, 2016.

The Smithsonian Libraries received a $511,200 grant from the Arcadia Fund for The Field Book Project to provide free, online access to the Smithsonian’s field books on biodiversity research. Over a two-year period, the grant will support the cataloging of 2,000 field books and the digitization of 2,600 field books, which will be made openly available via multiple platforms, including the Smithsonian’s Collection Search Center and the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

The Smithsonian Libraries opens its new exhibition “Fantastic Worlds: Science and Fiction, 1780–1910” in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History July 1. “Fantastic Worlds” will be on display through October 2016.

Today, the Biodiversity Heritage Library, headquartered at the Smithsonian Libraries, announced the launch of two new crowdsourcing games, Smorball and Beanstalk. The games, created Dartmouth College's Tiltfactor, will help improve access to books and journals online in the BHL collection by verifying the accuracy of text previously encoded by optical character recognition software.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), headquartered at the Smithsonian Libraries, welcomes The Field Museum as a new member. One of the original founding institutions of BHL in 2007, The Field Museum has participated in the Biodiversity Heritage Library as an affiliate since 2012 and now represents the consortium’s 16th member.
