These two volumes describe Hevelius's observatory, the best in Europe, and
the observations he made there. A fire in 1679 burned all but a few dozen
copies of volume 2, making this complete set quite rare.
Our copy was previously owned by G. Shuckburgh Evelyn,1796 and later by the
noted book collector, Herbert McLean Evans. The full polished calf binding of
our copy is said to be by Roger Payne. It is lacking the half-title in vol.
1.
