10. Europe's Best Observatory
A description of the observatory Hevelius built at Danzig, the best equipped
in Europe at the time. Here he made great numbers of observations with
open-sight instruments shown beautifully engraved by him in these volumes. He
observed sunspots, charted the lunar surface, discovered the moon's libration
in longitude and added four unknown comets. The observatory burned in 1679,
shortly after a visit by Halley, and scarcely a dozen copies of Vols. 2 and 3
survived the fire.
