Hosted by the Smithsonian’s Learning Lab digital platform, Unstacked is a growing collection of image-based artifacts from the Smithsonian Libraries. When visitors use Unstacked they can access various sets of images from the Smithsonian Libraries collections, each centering on specific topics. The digital format of Unstacked allows educators to access it in the library, classroom, gallery, or home. The hands-on format, called Unstacked OutBox, is a tactile tool, operated by placing a card or 3D print fitted with a small metal sticker onto its sensor in order to trigger an audio response.  There are no screens in the Unstacked OutBox interaction, even though it’s a fully digital product. Users can follow along on a screen or from the text on the back of the card, engaging the topic through multiple modes. Having Unstacked resources available in both digital and hands-on formatting accommodates different styles of learning.
