Romanae Magnitvdinis Monvmenta

This oblong folio consists of 138 engravings by Pietro Santi Bartoli and Giacomo Lauro ⁠—illustrating the palazzi, churches, monuments, arenas, statues, and public scenes of Rome in the 17th century with explanatory text. Originally engraved by Lauro for a 1637 publication, the plates were adapted by Santi Bartoli who added 16 more to make up this set.

Il Manoscritto Messicano Vaticano 3738, Detto il Codice Ríos

Another work donated to the Smithsonian by the Duc de Loubat, who funded its publication, this tall folio volume is a chromo-photographic facsimile of the Codex Ríos, an Italian translation and augmentation of a Spanish colonial-era manuscript, the Codex Telleriano-Remensis, held in the Vatican's incomparable library. Compiled in the 1550s and '60s, the manuscript contains several almanacs and calendars, pictorial chronicles, and cosmological and mythological traditions of the Tolteca-Chichimeca culture in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico.

Illustrations of Architecture and Ornament

This large format volume is mid-nineteenth century work on architectural details: decoration and ornament. The elegant copperplate illustrations were drawn and etched by the author.

The History of Physick

The two volumes contain a comprehensive overview on the history of medicine from the ancient Greek and Roman times to the beginning of the sixteenth century. (The word 'physick,' in the eighteenth century still meant 'medicine.') This is the second edition of this work, corrected and improved.

Poleni as a young man showed brilliance in a wide variety of different subjects and it was clear that he was extraordinarily talented. His parents encouraged him to begin a judicial career, but after being introduced to mathematics and science by his father, it was clear that he had now found the subjects which gave him the most satisfaction. His published works appeared also in these fields.

Observations on the Temple of Serapis at Pozzuoli Near Naples

The book was written "with an attempt to explain the causes of the frequent elevation and depression of large portions of the Earth's surface in remote periods, and to prove that those causes continue in action at the present time." The volume also contains a supplement titled: Conjectures on the physical condition of the surface of the Moon.

Natural Magick

Porta's Natural magick was originally published in four "books" (=chapters) and later expanded to 20 chapters. The text is devoted to various experiments, distillation, transmutation of metals, artificial gems, etc. The 17th chapter on optics is the most important⁠—it went through 18 editions in different languages prior 1600.

Outlines of Astronomy

Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) — astronomer, mathematician, and chemist — was one of the most important English scientists of the 19th century. In his Outlines of Astronomy, he provides a complex review of what was known of the physical world in his era. His textbook appeals to both the general and the specialist reader as it discusses a range of phenomena from Earth's basic characteristics to astronomy.

Oryktographia Norica

Johann Jakob Baier (1677-1735) was a practicing physician and professor of medicine in Nuremberg, but his most important contributions to science were in the field of oryctography, as the combined study of geology and paleontology was called in his day. In this book, he presented a new systematic attempt to organize minerals into a coherent classification and made major advances in disproving the idea that fossils were merely sports of nature, thus laying the foundations for the investigation of Jurassic fauna and of scientific paleontology in general.

McKim, Mead & White was one of the preeminent American architectural firms at the turn of the 20th century. This classic monograph reproduces plans and facades of some of the firm's most famous works such as the Washington Arch in Washington Square Park, New York City; the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York City; The Boston Public Library; and the renovation of the White House in Washington, DC.

Journal of the 2nd Annual Session of the General Council of the Indian Territory

In accordance with the 1866 treaty between the U.S. and the Cherokee Nation and the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muskogee (Creek), and Seminole tribes, a council composed of delegates from each tribe met annually to enact legislation for the Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). These reports list the delegates, their debates, and their decisions. We lack the third annual report (1872) in this set.

Ostéographie, ou, Description Iconographique Comparée du Squelette et du Système Dentaire des Mammifères Récents et Fossiles

Blainville worked at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, where he clashed with his colleague Georges Cuvier, the great anatomist and paleontologist, over the concept of evolution. Originally issued in parts over a 26-year period, Blainville's study of the comparative anatomy of modern and fossil mammals ultimately formed four volumes of text and four of plates. SIL holds only portions of the work, mainly the parts on marine mammals received as gifts from Smithsonian curators. The plates presented here for preservation treatment are extensively annotated in French.

Aschenbrödel (Cinderella)

Noted Italian stage designer, Mario Zampini in collaboration with illustrator Raimondo Centurione, developed this pop-up version of the popular fairy tale of Cinderella. The story is told in the six stage-like scenes as the flat book is unfolded into a 360 carousel third-dimensional form. Zampini, a designer of stage sets and scenery for puppet theaters, also created similarly dramatic carousels including Sleeping Beauty and Ali Baba.

This small pamphlet in James Smithson's library is by his friend and fellow mineralogist, William Thomson, who gave it to him. Thomson had settled in Italy after university and Smithson visited him there periodically during his travels. Held in the U.S. uniquely by SIL, it presents a brief report on the thermal siliceous encrustations at the Campo Flegrei near Naples and is followed by a catalog of the lavas, crystals, minerals, and other materials that Thomson collected from the spectacular eruption of Vesuvius in June 1794, a selection of which he sent to Smithson.

Genera et Species Asterearum

A German botanist and taxonomist who served as the President of the Akademie der Naturforscher "Leopoldina" (now the German National Academy of Sciences) from 1818 until his death in 1858, Nees von Esenbeck was a prolific researcher who described for science almost 7,000 species of plants. In the present work he set out the first full classification of the large and complex Aster genus. Although much revised by modern research, it still serves as an important reference for Smithsonian botanists studying the group.

Sulle Cicerchie

This publication on the wild chickpea is one of the books in James Smithson's personal library, now preserved in SIL's Cullman Library. Only one other library in the U.S. (and only 7 worldwide) holds the work. Targioni Tozzetti, a professor of botany at the University of Pisa, was a contemporary of Smithson's and probably met him through their shared interest in mineralogy and mineral collecting during one of Smithson's periodic visits to Italy.

Auctoritates Extracte Ex Libris Phi[losophorum]

This early handwritten book was put on paper in the era when printing started in the Western world. It comprises selected citations by Ancient authors extracted from philosophical and metaphysical books. Its traditionally presumed editor and compiler is Aristotle.

Wendingen [Frank Lloyd Wright Issues]

Wendingen (Dutch: Inversions or Upheaval) was an art magazine that appeared from 1918-1932. It was a monthly publication aimed at architects and interior designers, but attention was also given to art and design. The magazine gained recognition not only through its content, but also by its remarkable square format, the striking typography, and beautiful covers.

Experiments on Animal Electricity

An early work on electrophysiology and galvanism. Eusebio Valli studied the contraction of the muscles in a series of electrical stimulation experiments, much like his better known contemporaries, Alessandro Volta and Luigi Galvani. In this book, the Italian Valli chose to present his observations in the English language.

Aladdin

A pantomime toy book. At the center of the text is a double-leaf chromolithographed centerfold showing a stage with musicians. Within the proscenium of the stage is a series of smaller leaves of plates in varying sizes illustrating the action of the story. McLoughlin Bros., Inc. was a New York publishing firm active between 1828 and 1920. The company was a pioneer in color printing technologies in children's books. By 1886, the firm published a wide range of items including cheap chapbooks, large folio picture books, linen books, puzzles, games, and paper dolls.
