All creatures need a home to live in. Whether that home is a burrow, tree, pond, or apartment, all living things look for a habitat that supports their needs. Extinction of a species is a process that happens in the world every day naturally, but the current rate of extinction is almost 10,000 times higher than the natural rate. This extinction is largely because of habitat loss. When a habitat is destroyed, it forces animals to leave and sometimes even kills them. And moving into a new area can be risky due to its own plant and animal populations, as well as a limited food supply. Scarcity of food can cause more than just the deaths of animals; continuing to destroy the habitats of the natural world and thereby forcing animals into smaller areas will reduce the amount of diversity on our planet.
